Synopsis: Delhi traders are gearing up for record-breaking Diwali sales, expected to touch Rs 75,000 crore, driven by GST cuts and a growing preference for Indian-made products under the 'Vocal for Local' initiative. Nationwide, festive retail sales are projected to exceed Rs 4.75 lakh crore, signaling a robust economic boost.

New Delhi: Delhi is set for an unprecedented festive shopping season, with overall sales during Diwali projected to reach Rs 75,000 crore, according to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT). The surge is attributed to GST rate reductions and a strong government push towards Swadeshi products.

Addressing the media, CAIT Secretary General and Chandni Chowk MP Praveen Khandelwal stated that this year's Diwali could witness one of the highest sales volumes in the city's history.

"Consumers are actively responding to the Prime Minister's call for 'Vocal for Local'," Khandelwal said. "Indian products are dominating the market, and shoppers are consciously choosing Swadeshi goods over imports."

A recent CAIT survey covering 35 major cities, including Delhi, revealed a significant shift in consumer behavior. Indian-made products are leading in categories ranging from decorative items and home goods to garments, electronics, and FMCG products.

Khandelwal highlighted that Chinese goods, which previously dominated Diwali sales, are now nearly absent from the market.

"Importers have scaled back Chinese imports, especially Diwali-related items. Since the Galwan incident in 2020, both traders and consumers have steadily moved towards local products," he explained.

The festive season, which started with Navratri, will continue through Diwali and extend to Chhath Puja and Tulsi Vivah, giving traders an extended sales window.

At a press event, CAIT organized an exhibition showcasing Indian-made Diwali items by women entrepreneurs, highlighting the quality, affordability, and competitiveness of Swadeshi products.

"This Diwali is not just about lights—it's a celebration of India's economic strength," Khandelwal added. "Every rupee spent on local products supports artisans, manufacturers, and traders, boosting the nation's growth."

The strong performance in Delhi mirrors a national trend, with festive sales across India expected to surpass Rs 4.75 lakh crore, setting a new benchmark for the country's retail sector.
